Company Patents

The company has a proactive intellectual property protection policy. It therefore files its own patent applications. It thus supplemented its portfolio of licensed patents with 35 new patent application families, aiming to protect design and manufacturing technologies for Meganuclease Recombination Systems (MRS), notably in Europe, the United States and Japan. The first patent filed by the company was issued in the United States on August 29, 2006. Cellectis has also acquired rights on 9 patent applications and patents families filed by DIATOS and covering the Vectocell® technology

The company files two types of patent application:

  • Product patents

Any new meganuclease designed by the company is a synthetic product resulting from engineering in its laboratories. The company's intellectual property portfolio is continually enhanced by as many new patent families as there are new genomic targets (for new applications).

  • Process patents

The company has also protected its processes for manufacturing meganucleases with modified specificity according to the following lines of research:

  • methods for changing the specificity of natural meganucleases;
  • methods for selecting and screening meganucleases with modified specificity;
  • methods for improving the specificity and efficacy of meganucleases;
  • methods for validating meganuclease activity; and
  • methods for recombining DNA and factors that can influence it.

The company strives to optimize and uphold the intellectual property it licensed from Institut Pasteur. This strategy is an integral part of the company's mission.
Cellectis also endeavors to promote its own intellectual property by defending its own rights, while respecting the rights of others.
